Planning with NT Master Naturalist Class of 2024

Giving all the thanks to Julie Fineman, the visionary behind our CLM project, Oakland Cemetery was selected as a project space by 16 members of the North Texas Master Naturalist class of 2024. Today they held their first project planning meeting at Oakland where they identified several species of native grasses and flowing plants, pollinator trees and all types of flora that I am not educated enough to speak on (yet).

The project was laid out into two phases with the 1st phase beginning on the south west side of our cemetery in sections 9, 13, and 19. These areas will be roped off and mulched pathways laid out. Then the observation of natural growth will begin. As the spring progresses and growth happens they will continue to identify what is there that is native and friendly and what invasive species need to be removed and start preparing the ground for future seed germination in late fall.

I am excited beyond words at the prospect of how these areas can be transformed into black-land prairie full of seed, fruit and pollinators for our birds, butterflies and beetles.

It looks like a busy spring lies ahead. Here we GO!!
