Constellation of Living Memorials Two-year Pilot

Presentation Abstract

Presenters: Julie Fineman- Constellation of Living Memorials CEO, Monica Newbury - Oakland Cemetery Admin, Van Johnson - Western Heights Cemetery Volunteer Lead, Matt Orwat - Texas A&M Agrilife Agent

The Constellation of Living Memorials (CLM) is a project that blends sustainability, historic preservation, and maintenance of historic cemeteries in Dallas’ many neighborhoods. Historic cemeteries hold a unique cultural and ecological significance, yet many face neglect and degradation over time. Recognizing the importance of these sacred spaces, Constellation of Living Memorials has developed a groundbreaking approach to their rehabilitation.

CLM’s Initiatives:

Revitalize Dallas’ extensive network of historic cemeteries

Create balanced and sustainable ecosystems in cemeteries, as well as vibrant wildlife sanctuaries that honor the memories of those laid to rest

Enrich Dallas’ natural environment and connect communities with their shared heritage

Create native biodiversity hubs to enhance ecology, create beauty, provide climate resiliency, and support the health of Dallas

Activate a robust volunteer workforce and provide a range of science, culture, and art educational experiences for all ages

Build opportunities for communities to connect with nature and to each other

Statewide expansion: revitalize historic cemeteries and their ecosystems across the state of Texas

In many instances, historic cemeteries fall into neglect due to a lack of resources and uncertainties regarding land ownership. Our flagship initiative is a two-year pilot program designed to combat common issues historic cemeteries face and transform them into thriving ecosystems. Throughout the pilot program, our partner cemeteries refrain from mowing, allowing native plant species to flourish and reclaim their natural habitats. As native species flourish, we also oversee the removal of invasive plant species and the subsequent introduction of additional native species.

Whether through volunteer efforts, donations, or partnerships, we are seeking support that will make an exceptional impact on revitalizing our sacred historic cemeteries.

Albert Carver Cemetery cleanup and mulch spreading:)

We will be adding a temporary fence to the areas that have been damaged. The goal is to move the rod iron fence back 3’ (where needed). We will place huge boulders in the area around the headstones. The date of the boulders will be tbd. Once the boulders are in place we will add the temporary fence (until we get the funds to fix/replace). We will need to raise money to get the rod iron fence repaired and replaced.

We will also be adding mulch and making a legend and mark the graves.

W. W. Glover Cemetery 2nd Saturday Volunteer and Education Day

Volunteers are needed to serve the neighborhood including people, ants, and birds. Our morning begins with greetings, introductions, observations, orientation, discussion of plans. To be in on this, come to the front gate around 8:00. We plan to stay until 11:00. Average morning temperatures range from 80 to 90 degrees. You are welcome to search for your favorite native plant, ant, bird, and new friend. Darrell and his beautiful dog, Sadie will probably stop to visit and there are normally food vendors at the street.

By encouraging native vegetation, we are inviting native ants and birds into the cemetery. “The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer. The birds of the sky live beside the springs; they sing among the foliage.” (Holy Bible, Proverbs 30:25; Psalm 104:12)

History and Nature Walk Tour: Oakland Cemetery

History and Nature Walk Tour: Oakland Cemetery

Join us for a tour through our developing black land prairie restoration area as we discuss the preservation project and the history of the graves in that area. See first hand what we are getting so excited about when we use the term "prairie remnant". Get an up close look at our night herons and nesting ducks. Learn about the lives that we are honoring through this preservation work. For decades this area of the cemetery was neglected and forgotten these graves were over taken by vines and brush. As the Constellation of Living Memorials area progresses this once forgotten area will be brought back to life and we will be highlighting those that rest peacefully within it's borders.

Wear closed toe shoes and be prepared to take a walk
