The Land Never Forgets: The Beeman Family, Historic Cemeteries & Tallgrass Prairies

April 27 Sunday – 1 to 3 pm

Beeman Memorial Cemetery

DIRECTIONS: Head towards Shearith Israel Memorial Park at 4634 Dolphin Road in Dallas. Just north of the cemetery, turn east on Mingo. Go 2 blocks and turn right on Gault, which will turn and become Osage Cir. Look for people directing you into the Beeman memorial Cemetery.
Do not along Mingo, Gault or Osage Cir. due to congestion.

Overflow parking: Enter Shearith Israel and go left at the split. Proceed to end and turn left.

Presented by @Constellation of Living Memorials and @Wild DFW.

Spend a spring afternoon at the historic Beeman Memorial Cemetery, one of the oldest in Dallas and final resting place of many in Dallas’ first family dynasty. Bring a folding chair or blanket, snacks and a beverage. Settle in for a trip through southeast Dallas history as history insiders swap stories and insights about the Beemans and other associated families such as the Gilberts and Cockrells. A colorful and exciting image of pioneer life along the limestone bluffs of White Rock Creek will emerge.

Mothers Day Moon Walk and Native Flora Talk by Amy Martin and Cultural History Talk by Van Johnson

For a special treat on Mothers Day, bring your family to tour the historic Western Heights Cemetery for a Moon Walk and Talk led by Amy Martin and including Van Johnson to discuss the cultural history of the cemetery.

The Constellation of Living Memorials secured a $30K Grant from the Summerlee Foundation to conduct a one-year cultural archeological study at the Western Heights Cemetery.  The agent hired to lead this study was Victoria Clow, then Preservation Dallas's president and the grant's fiduciary.   The Constellation of Living Memorials program was created by the Friends of the Warren Ferris Cemetery, a non-profit organization dedicated to reviving historic and forgotten cemeteries, turning them into wildlife sanctuaries for community engagement. Through the Constellation of Living Memorials‘ two-year pilot program, a $30K matching grant from the Texas Historical Foundation to create a native pollinator habitat in five historic cemeteries in historically marginalized communities in South Dallas. Western Heights Cemetery is one of those five enrolled.
