History and Nature Walk Tour: Oakland Cemetery

Join us for a tour through our developing black land prairie restoration area as we discuss the preservation project and the history of the graves in that area. See first hand what we are getting so excited about when we use the term "prairie remnant". Get an up close look at our night herons and nesting ducks. Learn about the lives that we are honoring through this preservation work. For decades this area of the cemetery was neglected and forgotten these graves were over taken by vines and brush. As the Constellation of Living Memorials area progresses this once forgotten area will be brought back to life and we will be highlighting those that rest peacefully within it's borders.

Wear closed toe shoes and be prepared to take a walk

iNaturalist/Survey Training Class

Please join us for our iNaturalist/Survey training class this Sunday April 21, 2024 at Oakland Cemetery section 7. This training class is being held for each of our cemetery leads and any potential "citizen scientist" interested in learning how to use iNaturalist. NTMN Joshua will teach us how to use iNaturalist to collect flora/pollinator survey data to then be uploaded onto the Qualtrics portal created by Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Agent Matt Orwat for our cemeteries. This will enable us at the end of the two year study to analyze the data collected lending support to the research component necessary to further evaluate our project.

Prior to Training class:

Download iNaturalist app to your phone prior to the training class which can be found at https://www.inaturalist.org/

Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty,

Bring water to stay hydrated.
